Speaker Profile

Marietje Schaake is an expert on technology, policy, and geopolitics with a public sector focus. A member of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2019, she was influential in shaping Europe’s policies on technology, trade, and foreign affairs, including the implementation of 鈥渘et neutrality鈥 policies now in force. Now a Fellow at Stanford鈥檚 Cyber Policy Center and at the Institute for Human-Centered AI, she advanced several initiatives to promote digital freedoms, including stricter export controls for cybersurveillance technology, and new policies for e-commerce and cybersecurity. 

Her book The Tech Coup: How to Save Democracy from Silicon Valley provides a roadmap for governments to proactively prevent companies from harming citizens, and was described as 鈥渁larming and hopeful鈥. Schaake writes a for the Financial Times on technology and governance and serves on the UN鈥檚 AI Advisory Body.
